As he raced out of the farm and onto the dirt road, Pierre Fultone floored the accelerator, feeling official, grinning big. He didn't know what was in the small clear container fastened to the secured box on the seat next to him, but he knew it was important and likely somehow related to whatever they were chasing around this afternoon. Get it to the lab. And fast, he was told. He glanced at the container and could see the little ball of gel vibrating in sync with the car's motion. It was about time he was given more responsibility, some significant task, Pierre thought. He had been a graduate student a year now, visiting from Paris, as part of the Homeland Security Bioweapons program, studying biochemistry and microbiology which involved mostly lab work. He was thrilled to get out into the field, in some real world situations, and see what goes on beyond the lab walls. He hoped to eventually get into a good US medical school.

Sailing down the dusty road, he considered all the possibilities the gel could represent. Was it something concocted in a lab or occurring naturally in the environment? And how infectious or dangerous was it really? And there it was, innocently jiggling in a small container next to him. Hopefully in a short time, they'd all find out.

He made it to the paved road and turned. The ride was smoother and he quickly picked up speed. Soon after, he saw the sign for the university and turned into the campus, heading for the labs. Barely slowing at the security gate, he waved to Pradeep the guard and curved around back to the service entrance.

As he made the wide arc he glanced down at the seat and jerked, spinning the steering wheel away sharply and the car swung round, fishtailed, then swung the other way and smashed into the low brick wall bordering the lot, the impact right alongside the driver's side door.

Making sure he wasn't injured, Pierre rubbed his face and looked again and there it was. Reflexively lurching back against the window, he tried to keep a distance. In the container was a little man. It was alive and banging its little fists against the clear wall of the container from the inside. It was about the size of a baby bird.

While keeping his eyes on the little man, Pierre fumbled around with his hand, trying to locate the window switch. He peeled off his gloves and threw them in the back seat. Pierre noted that the little guy looked like the guy from the farm, the one in the overalls and plaid shirt—the one he took the blob from. He pushed the switch and the window lowered with a hum.

With great caution, Pierre reached and lifted the container with fingertips, held it at arm's length, the little man banging away. He shimmied and slid, was able to get his head out the window, then the arm without the container.
